Sonic the Hedgehog (game)
Sonic the Hedgehog, originally released on June 23rd, 1991 in North America and Europe and July 26th, 1991 in Japan, is the first game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It was the first playable appearance of the character Sonic the Hedgehog. It was originally released for the Sega Genesis but was later remade for mobile, GBA, Virtual Console, Xbox Live, iOS, Blackberry, Windows, Nintendo 3DS eShop, and Android. His rival is Mario in the Mario and Sonic olympic games.
The story involves Dr. Robotnik stealing the six Chaos Emeralds and attempting to harness their power to take over the world. The player controls Sonic whom aims to stop Robotnik's evil plans.
The game is split up into "zones", much like worlds in the Super Mario series:
- Green Hill Zone
- Marble Zone
- Spring Yard Zone
- Labyrinth Zone
- Star Light Zone
- Scrap Brain Zone
- Final Zone
The game also introduced some of Sonic's abilities, such as Spin Attack.
The game received very positive reviews and there were soon many sequels, which were a large part of the Sega Genesis's good sales. There have been many editions released on anniversaries of this game.
